Marty Walker Gallery celebrates the beginning of summer with an exhibition of new work from Anna Membrino and Omar Rodriguez-Graham. Their compositions question the boundaries between painting and sculpture as they illicit a debilitating sense of space within the canvas surface. The unfamiliar realism of these scenes evokes curiosity coupled with a sense of desolation. This exhibition will mark the artists first time showing with the gallery.

Anna Membrino’s Sugar Series indulges in the liquid spillage of paint. These anthropomorphic landscapes originate from studies of molded and shaped candy that become sticky and strangely corporeal. Her forms translated into paint preserve the enticing moment of the sculptures’ seduction into vibrant and unfamiliar forms. Large-scale canvases are intended to be visually and physically immersive, as layers and veils of paint reveal candy in foreign soft and fleshy states. Membrino currently lives and works in Dallas, TX. She has recently earned an M.F.A. in painting from Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Born and raised in Mexico, but trained in the United States, Omar Rodriguez-Graham builds minimal and painted sculptures as source for painted still lives. In this series, Composiciones, Rodriguez-Graham embraces the transparency of painting. His intimate canvases are rooted in composition and the formalism. Rodriguez-Graham’s use of stoic colors and emphasis of form, parallel the great tradition of realism. He aims at an objective sculptural truth through brush strokes and tone. His uncompromising structures founded in simplicity of right angles exist somewhere between pure formalism and the influence of the real.            

Rodriguez-Graham completed his M.F.A. in Painting from Temple University in Philadelphia, and has since been featured as an emerging artist on ABC News. Recent exhibitions since 2009 include: Arroniz Arte Contemporáneo, México D.F., México, Museo de Arte Moderno, México D.F., México. The artist lives and works in Mexico City, Mexico.

JAY SHINN AT MIXED GREENS, ART OMI

Mixed Greens presents Post-Op, a group exhibition exploring the influence on Op Art within contemporary visual art practice. Jay Shinn is one of eight artists who explore visual illusion through color, line, lighting and animation. Post-Op runs through August 17th.

Shinn has also been accepted into Art Omi International Artist Residency this summer in Hudson, NY, where he will be preparing his upcoming solo exhibition at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs this fall.

WILLIAM LAMSON AT STORM KING

WAYNE WHITE AT TAUBMAN MUSEUM

Wayne White's largest art installation to date can be seen at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, Virginia. 'BIG LICK BOOM' depicts the history of Roanoke while engaging visitors through sights, sounds, and smells. The exhibition runs through September 15, 2012.

In addition, Beauty Is Embarrasing, has been accepted into the Los Angeles Film Festival and will be screening at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on June 21 at 7:30pm.

BRET SLATER

Bret Slater's joins Jeff Zilm in a two-person exhibition at et al projects in Brooklyn.

Save the date: Slater has been chosen to speak with Michael Corris at the Nasher Sculpture Center on
August 23 at 6:30pm.

Slater has an upcoming solo exhibtion at Elaine Levy Project, which will be displaying his work during Brussel Art Days, opening September 7, 2012. Click here for more information.

KEVIN COOLEY ON ...might be good

Our friends over at Fluent Collab's ...might be good wrote a great review of Kevin Cooley's video installation, Skyward.

Cooley's Skyward has been extended and will be on display through the summer.
