Marty Walker Gallery presents 'SUPER NATURE', an exhibition of new paintings by Dallas artist Douglas Leon Cartmel.

Cartmel’s hauntingly subtle monochromatic paintings of slightly hazy reflections and foamy tides capture the fleeting natural abstractions of the ocean. Cartmel’s sleek, refined seascapes share a sensibility with the work of Gerhard Richter for their detailed, realistic renderings taken from photographs that are quietly blurred by supple painterly brushstrokes. The results are artifacts of a laboriously crafted object that flirt with memory and meditative abstraction, dissolving specificity with tonal shifts in pigment.

A graduate of UT Arlington’s architecture program, Cartmel has exhibited his work in Texas, New York and California, and his work has recently been added to the permanent collection of the Dallas Museum of Art. Cartmel’s work is also being featured in the exhibition 'Coastlines' at the Dallas Museum of Art, April 25 – August 22, 2010. Cartmel currently lives and works in Dallas, Texas.
